FAQ about Home and School

Q.  What is Home and School?
A.  HSA is a parent-run organization that is involved in a number of activities that have a direct impact on our school both financially and functionally.  The mission of HSA is to serve as a network of parent volunteers whose purpose is to provide an environment of support and communication between the administration, teachers and students.

Q.  What is the purpose of the Fall Fundraiser?
A.  The Fall Fundraiser is the major fundraiser that the Home and School has each year.  The amount of funds earned has varied each year.  Our goal is typically $30,000.  This year we did not reach that goal.  The reasons are many; the number or students/families that participate, the amount of profit that SJS earns from each item sold varies and we are all aware that the current economy has affected how much people are willing to spend.  We will be holding cookie sales in March to help reach our $30,000 goal.

Q.  What do the profits of the Fall Fundraiser pay for?
A.  Many things –
Two wireless computer labs.
New gym floor.
Air conditioners for the classrooms.
New table and bench tops for the cafeteria
Books for the media center.
Lockers for the Junior High.
Equipment for the kitchen.
Desks for the new Kindergarten and 3rd grade rooms that were constructed a few years ago.
The clock system in the school (so now all the rooms have clocks with the same time).
This year’s funds are earmarked to purchase a new sound system and window coverings to prevent glare in the gym.

Q.  Why do the students get Krispy Kreme doughnuts and water as treats for holiday parties?
A.
We have several students at SJS that have allergies to peanuts and Krispy Kreme doughnuts are a peanut free product.  It was decided to go with water as a drink as it is a more healthy choice than juice or soda.  Also all students may have special dietary needs, so water works for all of them.
